REGIONAL STUDIES: THE CASE OF LATGALE

Latvian Language and Culture Summer School “Regional Studies: The Case of Latgale” comprises two parts: Latvian language learning and Regional studies. Summer School is organized by the Centre for Latvian Studies of Daugavpils University, which on the basis of the State Education Development Agency of the Republic of Latvia competition has acquired the right to organize this school for the fifth year and is an experienced summer school implementer with a creative, professional, and responsive team.

ABOUT SUMMER SCHOOL

Summer School programme is flexible and digitally-based, therefore, depending on the epidemiological situation around the world and in Latvia, summer school will take place in one of three forms: face-to-face in Daugavpils, or online, or hybrid form. The exact study form will be decided closer to the school time.

Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral students, academic and research staff of foreign higher education institutions are welcome to participate in the summer schoool.

The language of instruction will be Latvian and English. All students will be provided with language learning materials.

Students completing a course will be issued a certificate of attendance (6 ECTS).

Students from the following countries only are eligible to apply for the scholarship: Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium (Federation Wallonia - Brussels), Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Norway, Peru, Poland, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, The People’s Republic of China, The United States of America, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam

Evaluation: Selection of candidates will be made by the organizers of the Summer School from Daugavpils University depending on motivation letters, in which the organizers will pay special attention to the reasons why the applicants have been attracted to the programme of our Summer School. The final decision on granting scholarships will be made by the evaluation committee of the State Education Development Agency Republic of Latvia. Daugavpils University will inform all applicants on the results. Scholarships will be granted to 10 students after having evaluated the application forms, motivation letters and curriculum vitae.

Scholarship covers accommodation, catering, lectures, workshops, field studies, study tours, and all cultural activities. Scholarship does not cover travel, visa, and insurance costs (participants have to cover travel expenses from the country of origin to the summer school location in Daugavpils themselves).

If Summer school is held face-to-face, students will be ensured with a living place in Biplan Hotel (18. Novembra Street 50, Daugavpils), that is, 15 min. walk to University.

If the school takes place online, scholarship will cover online lectures and activities, the making of video excursions and study tours including translations, all cultural activities, costs of online conferencing, study platforms, and technical support.

There are 10 scholarships available for participation in the summer school (See 'SCHOLARSHIPS').

Additional study groups will be organized for the applicants who will not be awarded with the scholarship and for other people interested. Therefore, it is also possible to participate in summer school for charge.

Participation fee is EUR 90.00 for Latvian Language Learning Module and EUR 45.00 for Regional Study Module.

Candidates were welcome to apply by filling online application form and adding curriculum vitae and motivation letter (2000 – 3000 characters with spaces) between 1 February and 1 April, 2021.

Participants for charge are welcome to register by filling online registration form.
