International Summer School “Soviet Military History Traces in the Territory of Latvia” comprises of acquaintance with Soviet military heritage and integrated learning of functional Latvian language.

This Summer School is an excellent opportunity to explore the military history traces of Soviet Latvia, through field studies at military objects, visits of military history museums, lectures and discussions and integrated acquisition of the basic level (A1) of Latvian language.

Summer School will take place in several locations. The first half of Summer School will be centered around the city of Daugavpils, but the second half of this programme will focus on Western part of Latvia – cities of Ventspils and Liepāja. The programme will end in the capital city of Latvia – Rīga. Still, the programme is flexible and digitally-based, therefore, depending on the epidemiological situation, some students can participate remotely, thus, executing hybrid form. The exact study form will be decided closer to the school time.

Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral students, academic and research staff of foreign higher education institutions are welcome to participate in the summer schoool.

The language of instruction is Latvian and English. All students will be provided with language learning materials.

Students completing a course will be issued a certificate of attendance (6 ECTS).

Students from the following countries only are eligible to apply for the scholarship: Austria, Azerbaijan, Belgium (Federation Wallonia - Brussels), Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Mexico, Moldova, Mongolia, Norway, Peru, Poland, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tajikistan, The People’s Republic of China, The United States of America, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam

Evaluation: Selection of candidates will be made by the organizers of the Summer School from Daugavpils University depending on motivation letters, in which the organizers will pay special attention to the reasons why the applicants have been attracted to the programme of our Summer School. The final decision on granting scholarships will be made by the evaluation committee of the State Education Development Agency Republic of Latvia. Daugavpils University will inform all applicants on the results. Scholarships will be granted to 10 students after having evaluated the application forms, motivation letters and curriculum vitae.

Scholarship covers accommodation, catering, lectures, workshops, field studies, study tours, and all cultural activities. Scholarship does not cover travel, visa, and insurance costs (participants have to cover travel expenses from the country of origin to the summer school location in Daugavpils themselves).

Students will be ensured with a living place in hotels nearby the place of study events. Transportation between objects and cities will be provided, as well as the needed equipment.

There are 10 scholarships available for participation in the summer school (See 'SCHOLARSHIPS').

Additional study groups will be organized for the applicants who will not be awarded with the scholarship and for other people interested. Therefore, it is also possible to participate in summer school for charge.

Registration is open now! Participation fee is EUR 350 and it covers accommodation, catering, lectures, workshops, field studies, study tours, and all cultural activities. The fee does not cover travel, visa, and insurance costs.


Candidates were welcome to apply by filling online application form and adding curriculum vitae and motivation letter (2000 – 3000 characters with spaces) between 1 February and 1 April, 2021.

Participants for charge are welcome to register by filling online registration form. The registration opens on 15 February.
